Former Welsh rugby star who left the team to play in the NFL failed to make the Kansas City Chiefs squad

Former Wales rugby international Louis Rees-Zammit has not been given a place in the Kansas City Chiefs squad for the new season.

The 23-year-old resigned rugby union in January ahead of the Six Nations tournament after decide to take up a new sport through the NFLInternational career of players.

The former Gloucester winger, who also represented the British and Irish Lions, has signed for the reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas The City Chiefs in March.

But Rees-Zammit, who has played primarily as a running back, missed out on a spot on the Chiefs’ 53-man roster.

Although he played in all three preseason games, his fate was announced Tuesday ahead of the new NFL season.

The Welshman still has a chance of making the training squad, and the Chiefs could call up members of the training squad at later points in the season.

He could also be signed by another NFL franchise.

Wales took the wooden spoon in this year’s Six Nations after his departure.

Rees-Zammit made 32 appearances for his country and scored 70 points for the national team.

The Chiefs have won the last two Super Bowl trophies, and three of the last five.

Rees-Zammit told Sky News earlier this year that the decision to quit rugby was the “hardest” he had ever made.

He had previously said he had “no preference in terms of teams” but wanted to be “at a club that supports” [him]”.

“For my dad to be able to say his son is playing in the NFL would be the proudest moment of my life. Not only my dad, but my brother and my mom are so supportive and I could never do it without them,” he added.
